worthfacinganyfear answered your question: Can anyone tell me the difference between a Catholic and a Christian?
Christianity is almost an umbrella term for THOUSANDS of denominations. Catholics ARE Christians. :)
Thank you! That’s what I’ve been hearing, but is it wrong for me to attend their service or Bible study?
Services/bible studies for Catholics? Are you another Christian Denomination?
For Catholics, you can attend a Protestant service. However, it does not satisfy the obligation of Mass every Sunday, due to the differing doctrines and teachings about the Eucharist. If a Catholic attends mass AND attends a Protestant service, it’s fine. I would say it’s the same the other way around for Protestants (Though I can’t speak for Protestants, since I’m Catholic!). So in and of itself it isn’t really wrong, as long as you’re getting to your own worship services first. :)
Bible studies - hm. It wouldn’t be bad, but there’s just the question of why you’d want to go. If your friend invited you to their bible studies when you’re from two different denominations, that’d be okay. You just have to make sure you know the difference between some of the interpretations of the bible. That’s why a LOT of Denominations broke from others - they thought parts of the bible meant one thing when others thought it was another. And then there’s the Protestant Bibles and Catholic Bibles, which are different only in one thing - the number of books inside.
The Protestant bible has less books than the Catholic bible. Why? Because either before or a bit after Jesus’ time (I can never remember which), the different Jewish tribes often fought on whether to keep some books (of what to us would be the Old Testament). Some thought the books should stay, and others thought they were irrelevent. Then, when Martin Luther broke away from the Church to begin his own church - the Lutheran church - he decided to keep the books that he deemed irrelevent out of the bible. The Catholic Church kept all the books in their bible. (Correct me if I’m wrong, anyone! I just learned this relatively recently!)
Also, Protestants and Catholics interpret the bible differently sometimes. You just have to keep in mind what YOUR Church teaches.
So, in and of itself, it isn’t wrong to attend another church’s bible studies either.
I hope this helped! Sorry I talked a lot. Oh, and sorry for the delayed answer!
